Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation. Performed carefully with proper anaesthesia, it is typically no more uncomfortable than a filling, and it saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

How we work

Saving teeth with precision

Honest suitability

Is root canal treatment right for my tooth?

Root canal treatment is considered when a tooth has inflamed or infected pulp tissue but is still worth saving. Prognosis depends on remaining tooth structure, root anatomy, bone support and what restoration is planned afterwards. We assess all of these before recommending treatment.

✓ Suitable if

  • Pain relief focus - Treatment removes infection and inflammation from inside the tooth.
  • Microscope-assisted care - Zeiss magnification supports precise canal cleaning and sealing.
  • One or two visits - Simple teeth may finish in one session; complex roots may need more.
  • Restoration afterwards - A filling or crown protects the tooth structure long term.

! May not be suitable if

  • Teeth with insufficient structure for a filling alone
  • Severe pain needing emergency assessment first
  • Active gum disease without prior stabilisation
  • When a crown is the more predictable long-term option

Patient benefits

Why save the tooth

Keeping a natural tooth is almost always the most cost-effective long-term decision, and with the right technique, root canal treatment gives most teeth an excellent prognosis.

  • Your natural tooth preserved

Nothing replaces a natural tooth as completely, as cost-effectively, or as comfortably as a well-treated and restored tooth.

  • Zeiss microscope magnification

Up to 25x magnification allows us to find and clean the fine canal anatomy that is responsible for most treatment failures.

  • Infection resolved at source

The bacteria causing pain or abscess are removed from inside the tooth, not just suppressed with antibiotics.

  • Tooth protection planned

We plan the final filling or crown so the tooth is protected after infection is removed.

Clinical assessment

How we assess an infected tooth

Root canal treatment is only as good as the diagnosis that precedes it. These are the factors we evaluate before confirming that treatment is appropriate and likely to succeed.

Pain relief focus

Treatment removes infection and inflammation from inside the tooth. This helps us plan root canal treatments around your real starting point, rather than relying on a generic treatment pathway.

Microscope-assisted care

Zeiss magnification supports precise canal cleaning and sealing. We explain what we find clearly, including where a more cautious or staged approach would protect the final result.

One or two visits

Simple teeth may finish in one session; complex roots may need more. Small details at this stage can change comfort, appearance and longevity, so we take time before recommending treatment.

Restoration afterwards

A filling or crown protects the tooth structure long term. The aim is a plan that feels considered, predictable and appropriate for your long-term oral health.

  1. Diagnosis visit

    Assessment and x-rays

We confirm diagnosis, explain options and agree whether root canal or extraction is best.

  2. Treatment session

    Cleaning and disinfection

Under local anaesthetic, infected tissue is removed and root canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

  3. Same or next visit

    Canal filling and seal

Canals are sealed to reduce re-infection risk, then the tooth is rebuilt.

  4. After healing

    Definitive restoration

A crown is often recommended for back teeth to protect against fracture.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers about root canal treatment, what to expect, how many visits, and why microscope magnification matters.

Is root canal painful?

Treatment is done under local anaesthetic and is usually no worse than a filling. Some tenderness afterwards is normal. We will keep you comfortable, explain what is normal afterwards, and give you clear guidance on when to contact us.

How long does a root canal take?

Simple teeth may take 60–90 minutes; complex molars may need two visits. At consultation, we will give you a realistic timeline for your mouth rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.

Why do I need a crown after?

Root-treated teeth are more brittle, a crown protects against fracture when chewing. We will compare the sensible options with you, including the quieter pros and cons, so you can choose without feeling rushed.

What if root canal fails?

Retreatment or referral may be possible; extraction is a last resort if the tooth cannot be saved. At consultation, we will give you a realistic timeline for your mouth rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.

Is extraction cheaper?

Upfront yes, but replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge often costs more long term. Before you commit, we will talk through the likely fee range and any choices that could affect the final plan.

Can I drive after?

Yes, unless you have had sedation, which requires an escort. We will check your health, comfort and expectations carefully, then explain whether this is a good fit for you.

How do I book a root canal treatments consultation at Bridge Dental?

Use our online booking link or call reception. We will confirm appointment length, what to bring, and whether any preparatory steps are needed. If you are unsure what to book, our reception team can guide you gently to the right appointment.

Are guide fees fixed before treatment?

We provide written estimates from our published fee guide. If your clinical needs change after assessment, we discuss any difference before proceeding. Before you commit, we will talk through the likely fee range and any choices that could affect the final plan.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment removes infection from inside a tooth - the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels - then cleans, disinfects and seals the root canals. It lets you keep a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. We use careful isolation and magnification to work precisely, and we discuss prognosis honestly before you commit.

What is “first stage” root canal treatment?

If you are in acute pain, we may start with a first-stage visit to relieve symptoms: opening the tooth, removing the source of infection and placing a temporary dressing. This is not the full treatment. Once you are comfortable, we complete cleaning, sealing and the definitive restoration, often a crown on back teeth, in further visits. We explain which stage you are at and what the full plan involves before we begin.

Why is an Emax crown often recommended afterwards?

A root-treated tooth is more brittle, especially when chewing. A crown wraps the tooth to protect it from splitting. Emax is a strong, natural-looking ceramic we often use for the visible part of the tooth. We confirm whether a crown, onlay or filling is most appropriate before treatment is finished.
