Dental Implants

A dental implant is the closest thing dentistry has to replacing a tooth root, and when it is planned precisely, placed carefully and restored with skill, it is the most natural-feeling, long-lasting solution available for a missing tooth.

How we work

Implants planned properly

Honest suitability

Are dental implants right for me?

Implants can be an excellent long-term solution for missing teeth, but suitability depends on bone volume, gum health, bite stability and medical history. We assess each of these carefully before comparing implants with bridges or dentures, so your decision is fully informed rather than based on what sounds most appealing.

✓ Suitable if

  • One or more missing teeth with adequate bone (or grafting possible)
  • Healthy gums or gum disease under control
  • Non-smokers or light smokers willing to follow aftercare
  • Commitment to daily cleaning and regular reviews

! May not be suitable if

  • Uncontrolled gum disease or heavy smoking
  • Certain medical conditions affecting healing
  • Insufficient bone without grafting where grafting is declined
  • Very young patients whose jaws are still growing

Patient benefits

Why implants are often preferred

Patients choose implants because they want something that functions and feels like a real tooth, stable, independent of adjacent teeth and capable of lasting decades. Here is what consistently matters when weighing implants against the alternatives.

  • Bone preserved, not lost

The only tooth replacement that stimulates the jawbone and slows the resorption that follows extraction.

  • Fixed, stable, permanent feel

No adhesives, no removal, no movement. Implants function and feel closer to natural teeth than any other option.

  • Adjacent teeth untouched

Unlike a bridge, no neighbouring teeth are prepared or crowned down to support the restoration.

  • Long-term confidence

Implants are planned to restore chewing, appearance and stability with a solution designed to last.

Clinical assessment

How we plan implant treatment

The most important decisions in implant treatment happen at assessment, not in surgery. These are the factors that shape every plan we make.

Bone volume

CBCT and clinical exam to confirm safe implant position. This helps us plan dental implants around your real starting point, rather than relying on a generic treatment pathway.

Gum health

Inflammation must be controlled before and after placement. We explain what we find clearly, including where a more cautious or staged approach would protect the final result.

Bite forces

How neighbouring teeth and implants will share load. Small details at this stage can change comfort, appearance and longevity, so we take time before recommending treatment.

Medical history

Medications, diabetes control and healing factors. The aim is a plan that feels considered, predictable and appropriate for your long-term oral health.

  1. Planning stage

    Assessment

We assess health, gum condition and bone volume, then confirm your treatment options.

  2. Surgical stage

    Placement

The titanium post is placed under local anaesthetic, with aftercare instructions for healing.

  3. Healing stage

    Healing

Bone integrates with the implant over the following weeks to months.

  4. Restorative stage

    Restoration

Impressions are taken and your final restoration is fitted for function and aesthetics.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Honest answers about dental implants at our London Bridge practice, suitability, timelines, bone grafting and fees.

Am I suitable for implants?

Most healthy adults with enough bone qualify, we assess smoking, diabetes and medications at consultation. A scan and careful examination help us understand what is possible, and we will explain any staged options clearly before you decide.

How long does treatment take?

Often 4–6 months from placement to final crown, depending on healing and complexity. At consultation, we will give you a realistic timeline for your mouth rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.

Does implant surgery hurt?

Placement is under local anaesthetic; mild swelling for a few days is common. We will keep you comfortable, explain what is normal afterwards, and give you clear guidance on when to contact us.

What if I lack bone?

Grafting or sinus lift can often make implants possible, confirmed on 3D scan. A scan and careful examination help us understand what is possible, and we will explain any staged options clearly before you decide.

How do I clean implants?

Brush, use interdental aids and attend hygiene, we show techniques for your restoration type. We will show you the small daily habits that make the biggest difference, so looking after the result feels manageable.

Implants vs dentures?

Implants offer superior stability and bone support; dentures cost less upfront but may need relining and adhesives. A scan and careful examination help us understand what is possible, and we will explain any staged options clearly before you decide.

How do I book a dental implants consultation at Bridge Dental?

Use our online booking link or call reception. We will confirm appointment length, what to bring, and whether any preparatory steps are needed. If you are unsure what to book, our reception team can guide you gently to the right appointment.

Are guide fees fixed before treatment?

We provide written estimates from our published fee guide. If your clinical needs change after assessment, we discuss any difference before proceeding. Before you commit, we will talk through the likely fee range and any choices that could affect the final plan.

What actually is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw to replace a missing tooth root. Over several weeks the bone bonds to it - a process called osseointegration - creating a stable foundation for a crown, bridge or denture. It is planned from detailed assessment and 3D imaging where needed, and every stage is explained in your written plan before treatment starts.

What is bone augmentation?

Bone augmentation means adding bone or bone substitute material where the jaw is too thin or short to support an implant safely. It can be done at implant placement or as a separate stage, depending on your scan. If augmentation is needed, we explain why, outline the options - including sinus lift where the upper back jaw is involved - and quote it in writing before you commit.

What is an Emax crown on an implant?

Once your implant has healed, it needs a custom crown attached to the implant post - the part you actually chew on. We often use Emax, a strong, lifelike ceramic that works well for natural-looking results. Material choice depends on bite, position and aesthetics, and we discuss this when we plan your final restoration.
