Cleaner teeth, healthier gums

Honest suitability

How often should I see the hygienist?

Most adults benefit from professional cleaning every three to six months, but the right interval depends on gum health, plaque levels, whether you have implants or fixed appliances, and your personal risk profile. We recommend a frequency based on what your mouth actually needs.

✓ Suitable if

  • All adults with natural teeth, whatever their home care routine
  • Patients with implants, bridges or orthodontic appliances needing specialist technique
  • Anyone with a history of gum disease requiring three to four monthly maintenance
  • Patients preparing for whitening, crowns, veneers or implants

! May not be suitable if

  • Acute dental infection - a dentist should assess the cause first
  • Advanced periodontitis beyond hygiene management - periodontal treatment is more appropriate
  • Medical conditions requiring specific protocol modification without prior clearance
  • None in practice - professional hygiene benefits virtually all adults

Patient benefits

Benefits of regular hygienist care

Regular hygiene care is one of the most cost-effective investments you can make in your long-term dental and overall health.

  • Cleaner where brushing cannot reach

Tartar bonds to enamel and can only be safely removed with professional instruments. No toothbrush, however good, can do this.

  • Gum inflammation reversed

Regular professional cleaning reduces the bacterial load that causes bleeding, swelling and the progression to periodontal disease.

  • Fresher breath at source

Bacterial build-up below the gum line is the most common cause of persistent bad breath. Hygiene appointments address it directly.

  • Stain removal options

We can advise when standard polishing or Airflow stain removal is the better fit for your teeth.

Clinical assessment

What your hygienist checks at every visit

A hygiene appointment at Bridge Dental is not a standard clean. We assess gum status, plaque distribution and home care before and during every visit so the appointment is focused on what your mouth actually needs.

Scale and polish

Removes tartar and surface staining. This helps us plan hygienist services around your real starting point, rather than relying on a generic treatment pathway.

Gum checks

Monitors bleeding, pockets and inflammation trends. We explain what we find clearly, including where a more cautious or staged approach would protect the final result.

Interdental guidance

Shows the best tools and technique for your mouth. Small details at this stage can change comfort, appearance and longevity, so we take time before recommending treatment.

Breath and plaque advice

Targets causes of persistent plaque build-up and odour. The aim is a plan that feels considered, predictable and appropriate for your long-term oral health.

  1. Start of visit

    Oral and gum assessment

Your hygienist checks gum condition, plaque levels and any areas needing extra focus.

  2. Cleaning phase

    Scale, polish and stain removal

Plaque and tartar are removed, then teeth are polished to leave surfaces cleaner and smoother.

  3. Coaching phase

    Home-care instruction

You receive tailored brushing and interdental cleaning advice to maintain results between appointments.

  4. Before leaving

    Recall schedule

Your next hygiene interval is agreed based on your gum health and prevention needs.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers about hygienist appointments, how often to attend, what is included, and what professional cleaning actually does.

How often should I see the hygienist?

Every 3–6 months for most patients; more often if you have gum disease or braces. We will talk this through with you carefully and make sure you understand the next step before making any decision.

Does cleaning damage enamel?

No, professional scaling is safe when performed correctly. We will check your health, comfort and expectations carefully, then explain whether this is a good fit for you.

Will my teeth be whiter?

Surface stain is removed, which brightens teeth, but intrinsic colour needs whitening treatment. We will look at your natural teeth, smile and expectations first, then guide you towards a result that feels balanced rather than overdone.

Can I book without seeing a dentist?

Direct access hygiene is available for suitable patients. If you are unsure what to book, our reception team can guide you gently to the right appointment.

What if my gums bleed?

Bleeding often means inflammation, cleaning and better home care usually improve this. We will show you the small daily habits that make the biggest difference, so looking after the result feels manageable.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Yes, hygiene is encouraged in pregnancy; tell us so we can adapt care if needed. We will show you the small daily habits that make the biggest difference, so looking after the result feels manageable.

How do I book a hygienist services consultation at Bridge Dental?

Use our online booking link or call reception. We will confirm appointment length, what to bring, and whether any preparatory steps are needed. If you are unsure what to book, our reception team can guide you gently to the right appointment.

Are guide fees fixed before treatment?

We provide written estimates from our published fee guide. If your clinical needs change after assessment, we discuss any difference before proceeding. Before you commit, we will talk through the likely fee range and any choices that could affect the final plan.

What is Airflow stain removal?

Airflow is a gentle stain-removal treatment that uses a fine powder and warm water spray to lift surface staining from teeth - often from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking. It is not a substitute for gum treatment, but it can be added to a hygiene visit when stain is the main concern. We will advise whether Airflow, standard scaling and polish, or a longer appointment is right for you.

What is the difference between a hygienist visit and periodontal treatment?

Hygienist appointments focus on prevention and maintenance: removing plaque and tartar, polishing, and coaching you on home care. Periodontitis is advanced gum disease with deeper damage to the tissues and bone supporting your teeth. That needs a structured periodontal plan, not routine hygiene alone. If your gums need more than maintenance, we will explain clearly and guide you to the right level of care.
