Five summer smile tips from our hygienist team

Holidays, weddings, and outdoor events are on the calendar - here is how to protect your teeth and gums through the warmer months.

Summer often means a change of routine: later evenings, more social drinks, travel, and sugary treats. A few simple habits can help you avoid emergencies and keep your smile fresh for the events that matter.

Stay hydrated with water rather than sipping sugary or acidic drinks throughout the day - frequent sipping exposes teeth to acid for longer. If you enjoy prosecco, cordials, or sports drinks, try to have them with a meal and rinse with water afterwards.

If you play contact sport or go on a cycling or skiing holiday, consider a custom mouthguard. Off-the-shelf guards are better than nothing, but a fitted guard is more comfortable and offers better protection.

Do not skip brushing when you are out of routine - pack a travel toothbrush, and if you forget after a late night, brush as soon as you remember rather than leaving plaque overnight.

Finally, book a hygiene visit or check-up before a busy period if it has been more than six months since your last appointment. Small problems are quicker and cheaper to fix before they become toothache on holiday.
